How to Choose the Right Poster Size for Your Wall (Size Guide)

Large framed watercolor mountain sunset poster hanging above a light linen sofa in a bright Scandinavian living room

Cover about two thirds of the furniture's width and hang the poster's centre at 145 cm. That is the right size almost every time.

For most walls: 45x60 cm for small spaces, 60x80 cm for sofas, beds and sideboards.

Part 2

Two simple rules

1. The two-thirds rule

Art over furniture should cover about two thirds of its width.

  • Sofa about 200 cm wide: art about 130 cm wide
  • One 60x80 cm poster is only 60 cm wide, so for wide sofas use two or three posters side by side

2. Hang it at eye level

  • Poster centre at about 145 cm from the floor
  • Above furniture leave 15 to 25 cm of space, so both read as one group
Part 3

Poster size by room

Living room: go big. One 60x80 cm poster over the sofa makes a clear statement. Try retro posters or modern art.

Hallway and small walls: think vertical. Use 30x40 or 45x60 cm or a vertical pair. Portrait makes a narrow wall feel taller.

Part 4

Building a gallery wall

  • Keep a 5 to 8 cm gap between frames
  • Align along a shared centre line or edge
  • Lay it out on the floor first, then mark paper templates on the wall before drilling

Part 5

Frame or no frame?

  • Framed: slim black aluminum frame, shatterproof plexiglass, ready to hang
  • Unframed: 200 gsm matte paper, ideal if you already have frames

Details: framed vs unframed posters.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size poster is best above a sofa?

60x80 cm for most sofas. For a sofa wider than 180 cm, hang two 45x60 cm posters side by side or a group of three.

How high should I hang a poster?

Centre at 145 cm above the floor. Above furniture leave 15 to 25 cm.

Is 30x40 cm too small?

Not for desks, shelves, hallways and gallery walls. For an empty wall above a sofa or bed choose 45x60 or 60x80 cm, or combine several small posters.

What is 60x80 cm in inches?

About 24x32 in. 45x60 cm is 18x24 in, 30x40 cm is 12x16 in.

Portrait or landscape?

Portrait for narrow walls and a taller feel, landscape for wide walls above sofas and beds. Most of our designs are portrait.
